final project proposal(s)

I had two ideas for my final project. Both involve making videos.

The first idea I had was to create a sort of "living photograph" based off this photograph of a ballroom scene by Henri Cartier-Bresson .tingkelly.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/artwork_images_424216256_304267_henri-cartier-bresson.jpg . I would recreate the photograph by making a video in which all the action would happen in one take. I like the idea that photographs capture a specific moment, and so I would lake to maybe imagine what that moment was actually like. I would most likely seek to capture not only what you see in the photograph, which is simply couples dancing, but also the little things that people just do maybe without realizing it. I would probably incorporate some kind of waltz type of music to make it more realistic and also I would probably shoot the video from above and have people in a somewhat similar style of dress. Alot of what the actors do will be highly controlled by my directions, because I want it to retain the action in the photograph, but in some cases I will let them improvise or go off and come back, something like that. The project will allow me to work with photography and film as well, which are two of my biggest interests.

My second idea is meant as an homage to film, particularly, horror films. I legitimately enjoy a good horror film but sometimes what is almost as great as a really good horror movie is one that is supposed to be scary but ends up just being hilarious. The best example of this would be The Amityville Horror, a movie that scared the shit out of people back in 1979 but watching it today it's just ridiculous and also, to me, really humorous. My idea was to do recreate the movie in a purposely low-budget kind of way, but not in an entirely slapstick way. I would probably use alot of exaggerated acting and purposely crappy effects to emphasize the fact that these movies that people get so terrified by are, no matter how well made, just acting and effects and trickery. If this is too obvious, I could create kind of a mesh-up of horror movie cliches that people are scared by and exploit the ridiculousness of them.
